Working together to tackle climate change

Today's society is amazingly illiterate and assumes that the way that we live now, is just the way things are. However the environment is a good and was created in the image of God. Degradation is an injustice as denies people access to this good.

There is no better time than now to challenge our thoughts and to look to the future, asking the questions - what will God's Creation look like? How will society relate to Creation? what do we want Creation to look like - what is our vision?

Congregations for a Low Carbon Future is a project taking place within churches in Shropshire and Herefordshire, managed by Marches Energy Agency - a Shropshire based climate change charity. The aim of the project is to raise awareness of climate change, its relevance to us as Christians and members of society, and the opportunities available to churches and congregations for making a real difference.

The project began in the Hereford Diocese in March 2005 but is now rolling out to include the Lichfield Diocese and as many churches of other denominations in the two counties as possible. The project will continue until at least March 2007.

The project involves:

Low Carbon Congregations

Pledge to become a 'low carbon congregation' and have an energy audit of your church, and encourage your congregation to complete a survey of their home. The church and every member will receive a personal report with recommendations and information on the grants available locally, and special prices through the project.

Manses MEA has secured funding to improve the efficiency of clergy homes. Churches participating in the project will be offered 100% non-means tested no strings attached funding towards energy efficiency measures for their manse. This element of the project has proved highly popular and successful elsewhere in Herefordshire!

Church Lighting ' - the Light Fantastic MEA operateis a scheme offering a wide range of low energy light bulbs suitable for churches at a reduced price, from 1 W up to 325W equivalents, candles to fluorescent tubes. The service offers a Light Fantastic guarantee of replacement after two weeks if not satisfactory and a certificate of carbon savings.

The project is primarily based in Shropshire and Herefordshire due to funding limitations however 1 will try to help wherever you are! Please get in touch by email, telephone or post if you would like to be involved or would like more information on this project - I would love to hear from you! (Details above)
